Skin Detox

That fresh radiant glow, who doesn't want it?! Being in my early 30's has got me thinking about my skin more than ever, I want to take care of it and preserve it. Boy do I regret those tanning bed days. My mom always said I'd regret it when I'm older, mama does know best! We can't turn back time, but we can still preserve what we got and even improve it! 

I recently started going to a massage therapist to help me with my sleep issues (I'll have to make a post about what helped my insomnia). She noticed my skin was dry, dull, easily irritated, and had a few breakouts. So she suggested a 10 day skin detox, promising that if I stuck to the 10 days even my skin tone will change. I was up for the challenge! I wasted no time and started with the Sunday after Thanksgiving. 

What the masseuse suggested for 10 days

  • Vegan diet 
  • Drink activated charcoal everyday between meals 
  • Drink detox tea throughout the day
  • NO sugar
  • NO dairy 
  • NO alcohol
  • During this time try to eat nutritious and organic foods that are high in antioxidants, like berries.
  • Eat lots of greens to make sure you get enough calcium as well  
  • Drink lots and lots and lots of water. When you think you're drinking a lot of water, drink more. 

What I did

I tweaked this plan a little to fit my lifestyle. I'm very active and need as much protein as I can get, so I Included eggs. 

I replaced my morning coffee's cream (half & half) with soy milk, which I personally like with my coffee anyway, so I'm hoping to stick to it. 

I have to confess that I kinda cheated on day 3. One of the girls brought this amazing almond cake from New Seasons, and I couldn't resist trying it... it was SO good. It doesn't seem like it affected my results anyway :).

I started with activated charcoal in capsules from New Seasons, but I ran out on day 5! So for day 6 I switched to a powder charcoal that you mix with water, I also got it at New Seasons, but you can buy the same one online as well: Activated Charcoal.  


I also picked up two different detox teas from New Seasons: Puka Detox Tea and Yogi Rose Hibiscus Skin Detox tea


I took two detox baths during this time. For the bath add to hot/warm water:

  • 1 cup of Epsom salt 
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 
  • favorite essential oil (optional) I added lavender 

Soak in the bath for at least 30 minutes. 

I also used clay facial masks a couple times during this week to help draw out impurities. I admit that the first 3-4 days I broke out more than usual. Then the following 4 days my skin cleared up and I'm really impressed with the results! My skin is much more hydrated, has a new glow, is smoother and clearer. 

I did the detox for 7 days, not 10. The night of day 7 was my friend's annual Christmas party, which makes any diet impossible, so I ended with that night. However, I am continuing to drink the charcoal and detox teas for the remainder of the time. 

The main point was to stay away from sugar and dairy and to eat as much nutrition rich food as possible. I noticed a difference not only in my skin, but I also felt more energized. I'm going to try to stick to some of my new healthy habits :)
